Hiking the Cañoncillo Dry Forest

Day Trip: Cañoncillo - Pacasmayo

Pacasmayo - Cañoncillo - Lagoons - Sandboarding

We start our trip visiting Pacasmayo, to visit the pier, which together with Pisco (almost destroyed) and Puerto Eten, are the only ones in Peru, built with Mitchell System Port infrastructure and is one of the few of its kind worldwide. We enjoy the view of the sea and beach from the Plaza Grau, as well as the charm of the Republican style houses that adorn the place.

After this stop we continue to the Cañoncillo Natural Dry Forest, here we are welcome by the ranger. We take a short walk on a dry forest ecosystem of Peru. It covers an area of 1300 hectares and its climate is warm throughout the year with an annual average of 24°C, precipitation and winds are scarce. Among the flora the carob tree is the dominant specie. We find some wildlife like wild horses and coastal foxes and various species of birds like parrots, thrushes, chiscos, cuculas, hummingbirds, owls, eagles and vultures. It also has some archaeological remains of the Cupisnique, Moche and Chimu culture. The forest has three lagoons: Gallinazo Lagoon, Larga Lagoon and Cañoncillo Lagoon, which are rich ecosystems about animal and plant species. The forest is surrounded by sand dunes leading to a wonderful and very harmonious landscape. We take the opportunity to practice sandboarding in the warm dunes and then enjoy the peaceful view and the freshness of its three natural lagoons.
